Tri-M® Music Honor Society Hosts "Jamfest"

In what has become an annual tradition amongst Upper School students at Ranney School, the Tri-M® Music Honor Society hosted this year’s “Jamfest” — an event aimed at promoting music and fun for all — near the Crescent on Thursday, May 24.
The Tri-M® Music Honor Society hosted this year’s “Jamfest” — an event aimed at promoting music and fun for all — near the Crescent on Thursday, May 24.

With ice cream in hand, students spanning grades nine through 12 spent their afternoon listening to student-performed musical selections ranging from rock and roll to contemporary hits. Opening the show was the Ranney Jazz Band as led by director Kevin Cotter. While this group presented Blues and Jazz standards by Miles Davis, cover songs by The Beatles, The Strokes, The Who and Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as several original pieces, were also heard throughout the event.

All in all, the day featured seven acts including “The Lost Secret Band,” comprised of members Anthony Dennis ’14, Brandon Flynn ’14, Ethan Daniels ’14 and Calvin Celebuski ’13, and the “Band of ’13,” containing juniors Luciano Cioffi, Peter Bontempo, Matthew Callahan, Benjamin Puvalowski, Kyle Woolley and Alyssa Mullally as well as special guests Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. and Jazz Band Director Kevin Cotter on electric guitar and the drums. Also a faculty accompanist was Associate Director of College Guidance Adam Materasso, who sang Green Day’s “Time of Your Life” alongside junior Leah Chaise. Meanwhile, students Charlotte DeMarco ’15, George Timmins ’15 and Noah Goldstein ’14 each graced the audience with solo performances to “Eternal Flame,” “Here I Am” and “Bumblebee.”

When not on stage or relaxing in the sun, several Upper Classmen could also be found shooting hoops on the basketball court and chatting with friends at picnic tables adjacent to the Dining Hall. A true showcase of the year-round group and individual efforts seen by all students, those Upper School musicians who chose to perform should be proud of making their school a more musical place.
