Ranney School Class of 2024 Makes its Move to First Grade at Inaugural Kindergarten Moving Up Ceremony

On what Assistant Head of the Lower School Shana Lindsey referred to as a “benchmark day,” the Class of 2024 celebrated Ranney’s first-ever Kindergarten Moving Up Ceremony in RSPA Panther Hall on Monday, June 4, 2012.

With family, faculty and friends in attendance, the Lower School division celebrated the hard work, dedication, and growth of a very special group of students that has shown immense development in mind, body and spirit over the past 10 months. “These children are ready for first grade and the challenges that come with it,” said Early Childhood Director Stephanie Katzman.

Before receiving a special gift from their fifth grade “buddies” and meeting with their families and friends for coffee and dessert in Panther Hall Gallery, those 44 students representing Ranney’s four Kindergarten classes first gave several performances aimed at highlighting their individual growth and advancement throughout the school year. While Mrs. Martinez’s class showcased its reading skills by reciting two Shel Silverstein poems entitled “Hug O’ War” and “Me I Am,” Miss Atwood’s class presented an acrostic poem called “Kindergarten,” which the students wrote and illustrated all by themselves. Meanwhile, Mrs. Guadagno’s students recited the poem “Hello and Good-bye” and Mrs. Fischer’s class read an excerpt adapted from Bill Martin, Jr.’s book The Ten Little Caterpillars. In addition, the entire Class of 2024 demonstrated its foreign language skills through several musical productions as directed by teachers Señora Cordero, Madame Rosenthal and Laoshi Cooley, and accompanied by music teacher Mrs. Lippart on piano.

After singing the “Kindergarten Song” with music teacher Mrs. Geene, members from the Class of 2024 also received a book and Panther Paw magnet to be displayed within their very first lockers! Walking hand-in-hand with their fifth grade “buddies” Ranney’s Kindergarten graduates then proceeded to Panther Hall Gallery, where they indulged in sweets, celebrated their successes and viewed the creative Kindergarten art work on display.
