Sra. Cordero Participates in Puerto Rican Reading Marathon

On October 5th, Señora Cordero and Mrs. Foster’s first grade class participated in the 7th Puerto Rican Reading Marathon. This world-wide event is sponsored by the Departamento de Educación de la Universidad de Puerto Rico and promotes the importance of reading in schools. Ranney School was the only school in New Jersey to participate in the Reading Marathon. At Ranney, students begin learning languages in kindergarten and first grade. This early exposure emphasizes the importance of teaching students different languages and information about other cultures.

During class, Señora Cordero read Misifí and Misifú, a story by Margarita Robleda Moguel about two cats, which taught students how to pronounce vowels in Spanish. The students smiled as they repeated after their beloved Spanish teacher and copied interactive hand gestures that went along with the story. Following the reading, the students were split into groups where each of them wore a sign with a different vowel on it. The students then had to work together and sound out the vowels to arrange themselves in the correct order. Señora Cordero believes that participating in the event helped bring culture and language together for the young students.
