Jr. Tri-M Continues Toys for Tots Tradition
On Saturday, December 8, 2012, members of the Jr. Tri-M gathered at Toys “R” Us in Eatontown, NJ for the 7th Annual Jr. Tri-M Musical Toys for Tots Drive. Despite the gloomy weather, the 11 Middle School students, Jr. Tri-M Advisor, Musical Theatre Director and Middle School music teacher, Lilly Torrente and Dean of Middle School, Mr. David Ketcham all honored the tradition created in 2006 to help those in need this holiday season.
Spirits were high and happiness was evident as students used the proceeds from the 4th Annual Middle School Penny War to scan the shelves for toys that sing, play songs or involve music. This year’s Penny War proved to be the Jr. Tri-M®’s most successful fundraising effort to date. Students donated their excess coins and change to charity for a chance to win a grade-level dress down day. The collection of $1,768 was used to purchase 90 toys, bringing the Middle School’s total donations to Toys for Tots to just over 540 toys since 2006.
Equipped with iPhones for calculating, the students learned a lesson in math as they searched for deals, compared prices and tallied their cart loads. When check-out time arrived and their morning of shopping came to an end, the shopping teams anxiously awaited the results of who came the closest to their predetermined spending allowance.
Following the shopping spree, the group proceeded to the U.S. Marine Base where they unloaded cars with the help of their parents and followed Marines to the designated Toys for Tots storage area. These toys will be distributed to children throughout Monmouth County on a need-by-need basis throughout the holiday season. Students also were given the opportunity to participate in a “meet and greet” with several Marines and were congratulated and thanked for their commitment and service. After a group photo, the children bid each other farewell with a smile, pleased to know that they helped brighten a child’s day.
“What a fun, educational, and uplifting experience for all involved, said Mrs. Torrente. “I feel especially blessed to have experienced this service project with the Jr. Tri-M® once again this year. Each student proved to be caring and hardworking…they are already buzzing about next year’s event. Their families should be very proud…I know I am.” After earning recognition from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as the Tri-M Chapter of the Year in the Junior Division last year, the Music Honor Society continues to inspire those around them to remember the importance of giving back to the community.
The Jr. Tri-M® and their advisors thank all those who helped make this event a huge success, especially the Ranney School parents and administrators. Ranney School especially thanks the following participating shoppers for their involvement in yet another successful community service project here at Ranney School:
