New Head of School Message: Status of the GPA Building

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF RANNEY SCHOOL
Friday, April 12, 2013

Dear Members of the Ranney Community,

This afternoon, as we continue to assess the GPA building, we are glad to report that the transition of our Middle School students and faculty into alternate spaces has been very successful and the school day is moving smoothly. This is extraordinary under the circumstances and speaks to the commitment and caring of our Ranney community and community-at-large last evening. Many parents have already volunteered to assist with professional services. Thanks to all of you for your messages of support and offers to help us during this time.

The concern shown for Ranney School has truly touched all of us. Ranney security, school leadership and emergency response teams mobilized quickly within minutes of the roof fire to move forward the school’s established emergency plans to protect the campus in case of such an emergency. In fact, we especially thank our night security guard Chris Slominski, who first reported the situation and personally made sure that emergency teams were notified. Today, he is our hero.

Many volunteer fire teams, as well as local police departments from nearby towns helped to contain the situation and prevent more serious potential damage. The excellent coordination among our community volunteers is deeply appreciated, and we cannot thank them enough for their expertise and sincere efforts to protect our school. This is what great communities are all about.

Please rest assured that the next steps are well underway. The gym will be closed for several weeks as we continue to work with our insurance company. The roof and floor of the GPA will need to be replaced due to the damage. Gym classes will be relocated outside, weather permitting, and we do anticipate that the pool, lockers and classrooms will be open next week.

Kindly be advised as we proceed through this process of repairing the fire and water damage that Ranney School’s emergency response team is working in close contact with the local fire and police departments, as well as with a professional fully accredited firm that provides restoration services for such damage. Ranney is being properly guided by these experts on all repairs and safety matters.

Again, I thank you all for your great show of support, well wishes through many outlets, including text messages, phone calls, emails and messages that have spanned broadly across social media. The messages pouring in from near and far are heartwarming and we want to ensure everyone that our children are safe and our school is open and full of Panther Pride!

Have a safe and restful weekend.

Sincerely,

Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D.

Message from the Head of Ranney School
Thursday, April 11, 2013

Dear Members of the Ranney Community,

On the evening of Thursday, April 11, an electrical fire caused damage to the roof of the GPA building. Thankfully, no one was injured and everyone is safe. The local fire and police departments responded immediately to contain the roof fire. None of the school’s academic buildings were affected. The fire marshal has given us permission to open tomorrow, April 12, for a normal school day. For the time being, the GPA building will be closed for cleaning, repairs and further inspection.

Middle School students who have homeroom in the GPA should report to the Paulus Library tomorrow morning. Classes that are normally held in that building will be temporarily relocated.

Please be advised that the roof fire has been reported in the local press and on social media sites, and we therefore encourage you to visit our website for accurate and timely updates. Once again, everyone is safe and the campus is safe.

Thank you for your concern and messages of support. We look forward to welcoming our teachers, students and staff members to school tomorrow morning for a normal school day.

As always you can reach me at any time, day or night, at 732- 245- 0855.

Sincerely,
Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D.
