On the evening of April 20, 2013, more than 30 students, parents and faculty members gathered for “An Evening of Music,” the second annual spring recital held at the home of Head of School Dr. Lawrence S. Sykoff and Mrs. Joyce Sykoff. The informal event included a night of singing and musical performances.
Student performers included: Madeline Fabricant ‘14 singing “The Boy Next Door,” “On My Way and “Vienna;” George Timmins ’15 singing “Sure on This Shining Night,” “Love to Me” and “House of the Rising Sun;” Sabrina Park ’15 playing on violin “La Gitana,” “Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 8, RV 315/Summer Movement” and “Sonata for Violin Solo in D Major, op. 115;” Jacqueline Lee ’15 singing “I’ll Be There,” “I Dreamed a Dream” and “Clarity;” and Erik Bovino ’15 performing on piano the “Waltz No. 10 in B minor, Op. 69, No. 2,” “Your Song” and “The Maple Leaf Rag.”
“Thanks to great teaching by our Performing Arts faculty and exceptional skill among our students, the evening was another memorable showcase of Ranney talent,” said Dr. Sykoff after the event.
A group of students, including Jacqueline, Sabrina and Erik, also performed Adele’s Grammy award winning “Skyfall” from the recent James Bond movie. George and Madeline sang the West Side Story’s “Tonight” as a duet. Finally, an ensemble concluded the evening with Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide.” Accompaniment was provided by Mrs. Sykoff, Karen Miske, Erik Bovino and Performing Arts Director Tess Nielsen.
The students who performed throughout the night represent just a portion of the musical talent that thrives among Ranney School classes from the Lower School through the Upper School. Erik, for example, has studied classical piano since age 5 and received two gold medals at the Shore Music Educator’s Association’s Piano Evaluation, among many other high levels of recognition. Madeline, a singer and actress, is a member of Our Time Cabaret, a select ensemble of top Stagedoor Manor students. Jacqueline won the Freehold Idol vocal contest in 2012 and recently sang “The Star-Bangled Banner” at a Philadelphia Phillies home game to a crowd of 15,000 fans. She will attend the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music Grammy Camp this summer. Sabrina has been a member of the New Jersey State Youth Orchestra since 2008, and is a member of the Good Neighbor Ensemble, which performs at senior centers throughout the area. George, a tenor in the Upper School Chorus and Show Choir, has worked with the Triple H, Frogbridge and Spotlight Theater Companies, and plans to attend the Harvard Summer High School program to study, among other things, musical theater this summer.
Saturday’s event marked just one of many outstanding performing events at Ranney School this year. This past January, students performed at New York City’s renowned
Carnegie Hall. Several Broadway-style plays and musicals have taken place at RSPA Panther Hall and on the Roberts Stage. Evening Coffee Houses have showcased students’ raw musical talent with both covers and original songs by individual students as well as bands. And the season is still going strong with upcoming coffee houses, spring concerts and musicals from all divisions. View the full
