Robotics Club Competes in World Championship Tournament

The Ranney School Robotics Club has been working hard all year to design, build and drill their robots for multiple competitions—and last week, their hard work paid off when one of the Upper School robotics teams—Team A led by Raymond Moser '15 (Shrewsbury)—had the opportunity to travel to Anaheim, California, to compete in the VEX World Robotics Championship.

More than 15,000 people, including students, teachers, coaches and industry leaders attended the event, representing 24 countries. Approximately 700 teams competed at the Middle School, High School and College level. Simply qualifying for the championship meet meant that the Ranney team ranked in the top 9% of all teams worldwide.

The trip represented the first time that Ranney has qualified for the World Tournament and the students were more than excited to compete against top teams from across the globe. For a team only 2 years old, it did extremely well, coming in in 349th place among 420 high school teams.

In a show of support, the competition was streamed live and made available to the Ranney community through social media and the Internet. In fact, part of the event was streaming live during the April 18 Lower School Science Fair on the RSPA Panther Hall and Roberts Stage screen, further showcasing the diverse scientific talent that exists across the school’s divisions.

“The experience was extremely valuable because we learned many different methods of improving our robot’s speed, size and agility for next year,” said Noel Delgado, Dean of Students, who attended the competition along with Robotics Team Coach Raymond Moser. “With a larger Robotics space planned for next year, a 2013-2014 Robotics class offering, as well as several supporting gifts from families, our team will be larger, more enthusiastic, better equipped and superbly prepared for next year's tournament. Our goal is to bring two of our teams to next year’s World Championship!”
