Students Celebrate and Give During this Thanksgiving Season

Plus: Eight seniors inducted into National Honor Society

Ranney School’s three divisions have been celebrating what they are thankful for this past week in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday. On November 25, the Middle and Upper School held their annual Thanksgiving Assemblies. Middle School Head David Fischer thanked students in grades 6-8 for their community service efforts, including the food drive organized by the Middle School Community Service Club which raised and hand-delivered 1,109 cans of food to the local nonprofit food bank, Lunch Break. The students in Middle School and across all divisions are also collecting to support recovery efforts in the Philippines after the recent tsunami.

The Upper School celebrated Thanksgiving during its traditional ceremony while also inducting eight seniors into the National Honor Society (NHS). Inductees Quinlan Berger (Ocean), Madeline Fabricant (West Allenhurst), Ronald Geraghty (Colts Neck), Vincent Morano (Cream Ridge), Hunter Pearl (Holmdel), Paige Place (Manasquan), Francesca Toto (Ocean) and Samantha Samuel (Freehold) were welcomed into the honor society by NHS Advisor Ms. Kate Greenberg and senior NHS officers Elise Birde (President) [Rumson], Mostafa Meleis (Vice President) [Holmdel], Briana Richardson (Treasurer) [Freehold] and Steven Jacobson (Secretary) [Colts Neck].

After a candle-lighting ceremony that represented the four pillars of NHS (scholarship, service, leadership and character), the inductees were brought on stage to receive their NHS certificate, honor cord, membership pin and card from their chosen faculty mentors, which included Señora Gurman, Mr. Walling, Mr. Cotter, Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Fernandez and Señora Reiter. After the inductions, Student Council leaders Elizabeth Roberts ’15 and Steven Parlamas ’14 presented their reflections on the Thanksgiving holiday. Watch a video clip.

On November 26, the Lower School welcomed family and friends to Ranney’s annual Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day. Students, from age-3 Beginners through the fifth grade, were proud to show off their beautiful artwork displayed in the Panther Hall gallery and proudly took the stage to perform a variety of songs, led by Lower School Music Teachers Ms. Lisa Geene and Mrs. Dorothea Lippart. The students thanked their families and friends for their endless love and support and shared what Thanksgiving meant to them.

The Beginners opened the assembly with popular children’s songs and were followed by the students of the Classes of 2027 (Pre-K) and 2026 (Kindergarten), who sang a variety of Thanksgiving-themed songs. Head of School Dr. John Griffith expressed his gratitude to the audience and shared his excitement for his first Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day at Ranney. Afterward, the Class of 2025 (First Grade) performed “I Can Learn,” “Autumn Leaf” and “We Appreciate You” with signs and instruments, including tambourines and bells. The Class of 2024 (Second Grade) concluded the ceremony with renditions of “It’s a Musical World,” “America” and “Welcome in the Autumn.”

Following lunch and visits with family and friends, the afternoon consisted of another “Thanksgiving Celebration” for grandparents and friends—this time featuring students in grades three through five. The Class of 2023 (Third Grade) opened the afternoon’s assembly with performances to “Here Comes the Rain,” “Remember You” and “Thanks!” The Class of 2022 (Fourth Grade) continued the celebration with “Viva la Musica,” “America, Of Thee I Sing” and “Music Rocks!” The Thanksgiving festivities concluded with the Class of 2021’s (Fifth Grade) renditions of “Percussion Concussion,” “Snow Beautiful Snow,” and “The Future Begins with Us.”

Toward the end of the performances, Lower School Head Patricia Marshall thanked parents, grandparents and friends for helping to make the day extra special and commended the fifth-grade in particular for leading and serving as role models in the Lower School. She pointed out that the division filled a van full of goods to deliver to Lunch Break today, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, in addition to the canned items collected by the Middle and Upper School divisions.

This year, Ranney added a new “Sponsor a Book Program” to its tradition, in which grandparents and friends were able to make a donation to the school and in return, have a book in honor of their grandchild or a special student in their life placed in the school’s Searle or Paulus Libraries. A special nameplate on the book will be inscribed with the student’s name and the title will be revealed to the donor so that they can come back and read the book with the students in the coming year.

Ranney School wishes the entire community a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
