Ranney School Names Andrea L. Danial Head of the Lower School

Ranney School has named Andrea L. Danial, Ed.D, as its Head of the Lower School, reporting to Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith. Dr. Danial, Head of the Lower School at the Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, PA since 2008, will assume the position at the start of the new school year on July 1, 2014. She will lead the Monmouth County independent day school’s largest division, which serves more than 300 students from Beginners (age 3) to grade 5.

Ranney School commenced its search in January after naming Patricia Marshall, Head of the Lower School since 1999, as its Assistant Head of School for Academics. Dr. Griffith noted that the school made tremendous strides under Mrs. Marshall’s tenure and sought to find a leader for the Lower School who could carry forward the school’s strong tradition of excellence and align closely with the school’s mission and child-centered approach where “every child is known and valued.” Also key was finding an educator who could contribute innovative ideas to strategic planning, embrace technology, and help the school continue to prepare young children to thrive in today’s changing world.

“Dr. Danial powerfully impressed us as a leader who is a strong collaborator who can build trust among her peers and thrive in a community that puts children first. She understands the link between a child’s social and emotional well-being as a foundation to the child’s success in school and life. Her love of teaching and the profession, along with her ability and experience to manage change in a modern and evolving culture makes her the ideal fit to lead this division. “ He added that Dr. Danial brings a wealth of experience in working with all constituents, and, especially, in her love of students and lower school faculty. “Dr. Danial was highly endorsed as an adept, thoughtful, kind, and strong leader who will listen respectfully and act in the best interest of children,” he said.

As Head of the Lower School at Ranney, Dr. Danial will also partner with the Middle and Upper School Division Heads to bridge culture, academic standards and student life programming across all grade levels. Nearly half of Ranney School’s graduates begin in the Lower School and continue through high school as “lifers” to graduation.

Dr. Danial brings to the position an established career in teaching and learning support, professional development, curriculum development, accreditation and integration of technology with a focus on Lower Schools. While successfully leading Episcopal Academy’s Lower School, a large program with 450 children and 100 faculty and staff, she contributed to the school’s strategic planning and helped merge two Lower Schools as part of a move within the Philadelphia area. Prior to her role at Episcopal, Dr. Danial led the Lower School division (PK- 8) and Lower School (PK-5) at Manlius Pebble Hill School in Dewitt, New York. She holds a doctorate in educational and organizational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.S. in special education/learning disabilities at Syracuse University, and a B.S. in elementary education at the State University of New York at Oswego. Dr. Danial currently lives in suburban Philadelphia with her husband John, and has extended family in Syracuse, New York and Houston, Texas.
