Ranney Junior Honored with National Computing Award

Ranney School junior Amy Winkler (Manasquan) has been selected as one of 10 high school females in New Jersey to win the prestigious National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing Award. On May 8, she attended an awards ceremony, during which she was presented with prizes including a tablet and Bluetooth speakers. Amy was nominated by Robotics advisor and Upper School Mathematics and Computer Science teacher Chiara Shah, who described her recognition as a true honor for both Amy and Ranney School.

Award recipients were selected for their aptitude and interest in IT and computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history and plans for post-secondary education. Aspirations in Computing is a talent-development initiative designed to increase female participation in technology careers by providing encouragement, visibility, community, leadership opportunities, scholarships and internships to aspiring technically inclined young women. It is currently the only talent development program for young women in computing and information technology at the national level. Since 2007, NCWIT has inducted more than 2,500 young women into the Aspirations in Computing community and is helping to usher these women into technology careers.

At Ranney, Amy participates on the Robotics Team and has competed in several competitions since the program was established. She attended the VEX State Championship, where her team’s robot finished in the Top 25, and traveled to Anaheim, CA, two years in a row to help the team compete at the VEX Robotics World Competition. As a sophomore, Amy won first place at the Delaware Valley Science Fair for her project on bridge failures from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
