Class of 2018 Honored at Eighth Grade Rising Ceremony

On June 13, the Class of 2018 celebrated the annual Eighth Grade Rising Ceremony in RSPA Panther Hall. The 67 classmates received special congratulations from Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith. “This ceremony is not an end point, but yet a milestone on this journey,” he said. “We are proud of the accomplishments of this class and are confident that these eighth-graders will grow and thrive in the Upper School.” Following his remarks, Dr. Griffith, Head of Middle School David Fischer and Middle School Dean of Students David Ketcham presented awards to the following students:

Trustees’ Award for Excellence:
Paul Jensen and Ankur Govil

Tushar Bhatnagar Award:
Abigail Boyan and Luke Grover

Middle School Leadership Award:
Jacqueline Erler and Marc Greenstein

The Ann Kappel Citizenship and Service Award:
Lily Elkwood, Abigail Granata, Sarah Killian, Chip Johnson and Carmine Mastrokostas

Middle School Panther Perseverance Award:
Amanda Serrapica and Toby Savage

In addition to reflections from students Ankur Govil, Jaqueline Erler and Lily Elkwood about the meaning of “Knowledge, Vision and Honor”—Ranney’s motto— solo performances were given by eighth-graders Sarah Killian on the piano (Bach’s Praeludium 21”) and by Carmine Mastrokostas, singing “This is the Moment" from Jekyll & Hyde. Incoming Upper School Student Council President Elizabeth Roberts ’15 addressed the soon-to-be Upper School students and her brother Alexander, who is a member of the class of 2018. “This ceremony not only signifies the conclusion of one journey, but also the beginning of another. I know that you are ready to embrace the road that lies ahead.”

Mr. Ketcham was then joined by eighth-grader Catharine Sabaitis to present the class gift. After describing the multiple fundraising events that made the gift possible, Catharine presented Dr. Griffith with a check for $3,391 for the Student-to-Student Scholarship Fund. Anisha Gupta gave the ceremony benediction. To conclude the ceremony, the students were presented with their promotion certificates, received a welcome from Upper School Head Mr. Paul Zanowski, and recessed out of the ceremony to celebrate with their families for the last time as eighth-graders.
