Campus-wide Improvements at Ranney

Dear Members of the Ranney Community,

Just as summertime brings warm weather and time to visit faraway places, friends and family, it also brings a sense of rejuvenation. The retreat from daily routines gives our teachers, students and their families a welcome opportunity to prepare and recharge for the school year ahead.

Throughout the summer at Ranney School, many faculty members and administrators have invested time to focus on professional-development goals, thereby affording us new focus on the work we do to meet high academic standards in our student-centered environment. We have also invested time in campus improvements, ensuring that our school is updated for the months ahead.

Some highlights of recent improvements:

  • We have updated the Early Childhood building, enlarging the preschool classrooms for greater connectedness and supporting continued focus on team-teaching. The Early Childhood center is now devoted to our three- and four-year-old students (Beginners and Pre-K) exclusively.
  • Kindergarten students will now move into the Lower School Academic Complex (LSAC), where they will have their own neighborhood of rooms. The LSAC offers bright open spaces that allow room for interactive morning meetings, reading circles, writing centers and math instruction. Parent drop-off and pick-up will be easier for our Kindergarten families and will take place at the LSAC. Families will receive details about traffic patterns and dismissal times.
  • Our Lower School students will have less commuting this year, allowing for more time with their specialized teachers in art, music and world language. These classrooms have moved to their own clustered communities on the 2nd floor of the Early Childhood building. In addition, our science teachers will be able to work closely together with their labs now located next to one another in the LSAC. And finally, the Searle Library is now equipped and renovated to be a brighter reading and media center.
  • The Upper School robotics program will be greatly expanded thanks to the support of a Ranney family. Enhancements include four additional robots, bringing our total number of robots to 12. Students will also notice specialized shelving, tools, storage and organizers for the robotics room. In addition, we're upgrading the electrical capabilities of the room to handle the increased needs of powering so many robots. Recent purchases also include four new VEX IQ robots for the 6th and 7th grades. Plus, four Lower School teachers were trained over the summer in the VEX IQ system and the Lower School is also purchasing 10 VEX IQ robots.
  • For Upper School Students, we have expanded the use of the Annex Building's first floor to house additional history and science classes, in keeping with the division's growth.
  • Thanks to Annual Fund donors, a new and expanded training room is being built in the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics (GPA) for our athletes to work on conditioning and rehabilitation.
  • The GPA will also be home to a concession stand supported by RSPA fundraising that will provide a convenient place for snacks and meals and encourage school spirit. Our fields have also undergone remediation.
  • The Commons Theatre has undergone a major renovation thanks to a generous donor family. The upgrades include the rebuilding and expansion of the stage, acoustical enhancements and new state-of-the-art sound system and lighting, as well as a more flexible space for performing arts classes and shows.
  • Additional fencing now rings the perimeter of the campus, with plans to add security gates and other enhancements this year.
  • Our organic garden, opened on Earth Day this past April, has had an incredible yield for its first season (we encourage our families to take advantage of its offerings) and the Upper School rain garden has established itself throughout the summer season.
  • The new Lower School playground with all-weather turf and added equipment will soon be open and will provide a dramatic enhancement to Lower School academic and co-curricular programs. Again, the project was supported by Annual Fund donations. We welcome all members of the community to help us cut the ribbon to our new playground on Monday, September 8, at 11:00 a.m. An ice cream social will be part of the celebration. Please RSVP online (log-in required to register) by August 28.

As a reminder to our new students and their families, there will be an on-campus orientation the morning of Monday, September 8. We welcome all to stop by and make new friends, to see our playground and take a campus tour, if your calendars allow. Classes begin on Tuesday, September 9, at 8:30 a.m. for all students. Each division will be posting schedules, class lists and advisee assignments on the Ranney website (www.ranneyschool.org; be sure to log in) for our families as well as last-minute reminders to support a successful start of the school year. Should you have any questions before the start of the school year, please don't hesitate to contact the appropriate division office for assistance.

I wish our students and their families a happy summer's end and look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in September!

Best regards,

Dr. John W. Griffith
