Middle School Artist Receives Prestigious Award

Olivia Pasquale to represent Monmouth County at the Middle School Level in the Art Educators of New Jersey annual YAM contest.
When eighth-grader Olivia Pasquale of Little Silver, NJ, painted her final project for her 2D art class, she had never heard of the Youth Art Month (YAM) competition. Now her artwork has been chosen to represent Monmouth County at the Middle School Level in the Art Educators of New Jersey annual YAM contest to celebrate the arts. “This is a prestigious award that Olivia should be very proud to receive,” says her teacher Madeleine McCarthy.

When developing her final project, Olivia had a vision of a piece which would consist of four separate canvases. Each canvas would be painted as a part of a larger composition as well as a composition that could stand alone. After studying the work of Van Gogh, Olivia has been working on developing her own style. Although factory mixed colors are available, Olivia chose to mix all her paint colors from the primaries; red, blue and yellow. The results are evident in the depth of color, richness of palette and textural effects. “Olivia is a thoughtful and innovative painter. She is not afraid to take chances with her work and her boldness has been rewarded by receiving this award,” says Mrs. McCarthy.

Olivia’s award-winning painting will be featured in the 2015 New Jersey State YAM Exhibit at the State House in Trenton. The reception for this event will be held March 6.
