My College Journey, A Junior’s Perspective by Michelle Krameisen, Class of 2016

When asked to write about the college process, the first thing that came to mind was how exciting this time of my life is. Looking back to freshman year, I am so grateful for the friendships I have made with upperclassmen and their families.

Their guidance and advice has helped ease the college process. The end of freshman year marked the beginning of this journey as my family and I began to visit colleges wherever we traveled. Visiting my cousins in Illinois last winter break, for example, gave me the opportunity to attend an information session and tour at the University of Chicago that I might otherwise not have seen. Looking at schools over time has lessened the pressure because I am learning early on what type, size and location of school I am looking for.

Taking advantage of the college fairs Ranney offers each year and reaching out to College Guidance Office Co-Directors Ms. Simpson and Mr. Materasso with any questions I may have has helped tremendously. In addition, representatives from schools come to campus throughout the fall for small, intimate meetings. On occasion, during my study halls, I have been able to attend the meetings of colleges I am interested in. Another helpful resource has been using Naviance online. A wealth of information about upcoming events is posted on the Naviance website, including statistics about colleges throughout the country. Gaining insight on the different expectations of each school is enabling me to identify which colleges might be the right fit.

In terms of standardized testing, Ranney students definitely have an advantage having taken the PSAT and PLAN tests in our sophomore year. With the results from those tests, I was able to determine which test to start preparing for over the past summer, the SAT or ACT.

What lies ahead can be overwhelming and scary at times. The application process is crucial but I am confident that with the college guidance office, my teachers and my parents at my side, everything will pan out smoothly. In my junior year, I am focusing on keeping my grades high and achieving the scores needed on my standardized tests. By accomplishing those two critical elements, along with pursuing my passions, I will be well on my way to putting my best foot forward with college applications next fall. Over the course of the next year and a half, I will be attending more college visits and, as a senior, will be going to open house events as well.

While I’m typing away writing this essay, my family is preparing to pack the car and travel off to a college visit. I look forward to updating you on this journey as many exciting aspects lie ahead!

Michelle Krameisen has been attending Ranney since 4th grade and will be writing about her college search process through her commencement in May
2016.
