My College Journey, by Sarah Klein '16 – Part 2

April 2015

As we entered the spring of our junior year, my peers and I in the Class of 2016 were assigned College Guidance Counselors. I was lucky to get Mr. Adam Materasso in his last year of full-time college advising before he takes up his new position as Assistant Head of the Upper School this summer.

Mr. Materasso is unmatched in terms of his support and investment in my future. Our first meeting was obviously something to be nervous about, but from the moment the conversation started, I knew I could let out a sigh of relief. Mr. Materasso knew so many details about me and my experience at Ranney. He remembered that I participated in his Spanish class when I was applying to the school three years prior. It felt as though he had not only memorized what I was looking for, but truly understood what I wanted out of a school and future college experience.

“I can really see you thriving here,” he said when talking about one particular college. And even though getting into college isn’t about school titles, the places where Mr. Materasso sees me fitting in are all amazing schools. My test scores are not quite where I want them to be, so he created a plan for me with my Revolution Prep tutor and told me to try retaking the test after a month, not right away. He also advised me to keep the bigger picture in mind; I get easily stressed, so I should zoom out and look at my work proudly. I am so relieved to know that my College Guidance Advisor believes in my ability with such a passion.

There is so much truth in the word “guidance” here at Ranney School. Despite the list created for me, it is my responsibility to plan the visits and coordinate my family college trip—something I plan to do over the summer. I know that the research is valuable not only for finding my dream school, but also as a skill that I can use as I continue to prepare and create my world of independence.

In fact, it is clear that as I type away, the decision of where I attend college in less than two short years will not be easy. Even as I am impeccably guided, I have to make the decision for my future. But I am more than ecstatic to have such support with me along the way.
