Fencers Earn Two First-Place Finishes at Prep State Champs

Ariana Mangano and Nicole Vaiani fenced their way to the top; Eaddy and Lo also placed in top 8.
Twelve teams from across the state came to Ranney’s campus February 17 to compete in epee, foil and sabre competitions as part of the Prep State Championship. Four of Ranney’s 11 fencers made it to the top 8 individual spots:
  • Ariana Mangano, Class of 2019, took 1st place in Women's Epee. Ariana previously won the District Championship in epee. Watch a video of Ariana half-way through the tournament.
  • Nicole Vaiani, Class of 2016, took 1st place in Women's Foil. Nicole previously earned 2nd place at the District Championship in foil. Read about Nicole’s acceptance to UPenn for fencing and business.
  • Rebekah Lo, Class of 2017, took 7th place in Women's Sabre
  • Olivia Eaddy, Class of 2017, took 8th place in Women's Foil
  • Eric Wu, Class of 2017, placed in the top 8 in Men's Epee
Of note, in the final foil rounds, Nicole and Olivia had to face one another—the girls proudly supported each other and played their match respectfully, ending with smiles and hugs. "Yesterday's event was such a great experience because I got to win not only with my teammates by my side, but also with my classmates," said Nicole after the tournament. "Being able to fence at Ranney made the event so much more meaningful and really encouraged me to win for our school."

Added Ariana, “I enjoyed representing Ranney on the strip, and I really appreciate all of the support from the people who came out to watch."
Ranney fencers are coached by Mohammed Shafaie, known as Coach Mo, and the full Fencing roster includes: Ava Atanacio '18, Sofia Cioffi '17, Jasmin Davé '18, Olivia Eaddy '17, Kangqing He (Connie Hall) '18, Rebekah Lo '17, Ariana Mangano '19, Jonathan Park '17, Timothy (TJ) Spicer '16, Alec Taffin '18, Nicole Vaiani '16 and Eric Wu '17.
