Zhang Recognized as Up-and-Coming Writer with Poetry Award

Just as our first Poet in Residence, Lois Marie Harrod, joins our campus for a two-week stint working with Middle and Upper School creative writing students, Ranney is proud to announce that sophomore Cindy Zhang  of Marlboro has been recognized as an up and coming young writer by the Scholastic Arts & Writing Alliance for Young Artist & Writers. Her poem "In Autumn's Open Arms" (below) earned a Gold Key Award, and she is now eligible to apply for a Scholastic Awards Summer Scholarship.

Earlier this year, senior Rebekah Lo of Ocean won a Most Outstanding Poem award for her authorship of “Caustic Acquaintance,” published in Ranney’s Upper School Literacy Magazine, RSVP. See the back story. Congrats to both!

“In Autumn’s Open Arms” by Cindy Zhang

In autumn’s open arms,
the wind murmurs in hushed tones,
sending unheard whispers
that grow then fade.

Like swirls of soft yellows
to fiery reds on a canvas,
the leaves dance
in a soothing staccato.

Trees hang naked
to the king in the forest,
exposing their long-kept secrets,
shedding the last of their beauty.

Winter lurks in the shadows,
a mask of white blankness,
a facade of security,
a blatant lie of peace.

Now the sunshine dims,
warmth freezes-
a slave to the ice,
at the mercy of its new master.

Birds flee with fear,
of the bitter bite,
of solemn farewells-
never to be in autumn's open arms.
