Fifth Graders Test Out Middle School Life

Fifth-graders spent the morning of February 7 living the Middle School life as part of Ranney's Lower to Middle School Transition Day. They participated in three Middle School classes, including a combined orchestra session and a science class focused on collaboratively building a non-destructible structure. Students then had a chance to ask their older peers about schedules, work loads, athletic opportunities, electives, and more.

Below are just a few reactions from the fifth-graders:

Sophia Lennon: “My middle school experience is one I will not forget. It was my first time in the Middle School part of the building, and I was really impressed. The classes, teachers, and set-up were awesome!."

Dylan Oster: "It was exciting! I liked the freedom of walking through the hallways alone! The small classes made it easy to ask questions."

Alexandra Presutti: "Middle School was fun because I liked talking to the sixth graders about Middle School!"

Carter Holmes: "It was great! I liked that I could ask the sixth graders about the differences between Lower School and Middle School."

Kevin Mortenson: "The visit was better than I expected. The classes were more fun than I thought. We did fun activities."

Crosby Collins: "There is a great difference in independence at the Middle School that I liked."

John Welch: "I was proud to be in the Middle School and of all my hard work to get there!"

Parson Glover: "I like how the Middle School puts the responsibility on the students."

Brooke Lembo: "I enjoyed the way we were able to be free and walk around by ourselves."

Did you know that Ranney's new programmatic initiatives for 2017-18 include expanded course offerings for Middle School students through a partnership with an online consortium, experiential learning opportunities, and global studies units? In addition, students will work toward entering a Physics-first science track for the ninth grade and participate in integrated Humanities courses that combine in-depth writing with English/Literature and Social Studies.
