Sophomores Raise Funds for Eye Care in Central America

Sophomores Isabella DelNegro of Rumson and Himani Nayyar of Morganville are holding bake sales in the Upper School this week to raise funds for the Volunteer Health program, a nonprofit healthcare organization that focuses on providing eye care to underserved rural areas in Central America.

“In early March, my family will be taking a trip to the Dominican Republic to help underprivileged children and adults get the eye care they need,” says Isabella. ““My parents have been doing this trip for years, and this will be my first year joining them.  While there, my dad does eye surgery, my mom does medical exams, and my siblings and I will help with patient transport and eye screening.”

The mission of the program is to provide on-site diagnosis, surgical and medical treatment of eye diseases, and the distribution of eyeglasses if needed. In one week, physician volunteers from around the world donate their time to perform 150 strabismus (crossed eye) surgeries for children, 450 cataract surgeries, and more than 1,500 full eye exams.  Isabella and Himani explained to Upper School students that many Dominican Republic families do not have the money or resources for this type of healthcare. People travel from villages more than 6 hours away during this annual volunteer week to get help.

The bake sale fundraisers, run through the Upper School’s Hometown community service club, will help to sponsor a child’s surgery ($100 per child). “The Hometown Club would like to be able to sponsor a few children who really need these surgeries,” said Isabella and Himani. “Our goal is to sponsor at least four children in need as a school - we can do it!”

While in the Dominican Republic, Isabella will have the opportunity to meet a few of the children helped by the program and plans to share her experience with the school.
