Middle School Debate Team Takes Top Team & Speaker Awards

Our Middle School Debate team had a stellar performance Saturday, March 11, in the final Jersey Shore Debate League tournament of the season. Held at Dean Porter Elementary in Rumson, competing teams included Rumson Country Day, Forrestdale, Neptune Middle School, St. Rose of Lima, Barkalow Middle School, and Keansburg.

Advised by Carol Palermo, our team of three debaters – eighth grader Bhavana Akula, sixth-grader Rowan Johnson, and sixth-grader Julia Yanney tackled the following topics:

  • Zoos do more harm than good
  • Ban alcohol advertising
  • A free press is more important than national security
  • Public colleges and universities should be tuition-free.

The team took 1st Place for percentage of wins and 2nd Place for total team wins. In addition, Bhavana was awarded the top speaker prize for Ranney. Most impressive, however, is the fact that this was only the second debate that our students have participated in!

Next stop: the Northeast Regional tournament on May 6! Good luck, team!
