Students Earn Global Rankings at 2017 VEX World Robotics Tournament

Seven Upper School students and two Lower School students had the opportunity to show off their Robotics programming and driving skills at the 2017 VEX World competition. The April event, which took place in Kentucky, marked the fifth year in a row that Ranney’s Upper School teams have qualified to compete at the global level. The international tournament was the first for our fifth graders, who only began learning how to build and manipulate robots two years ago as part of the division's new elective course!

Fifth graders Parson Glover of Red Bank and Lily Aspen of Manasquan proudly represented Ranney’s Lower School in the VEX IQ division, which uses snap-together pieces. Their robot finished 164 out of 250 robots in the skills challenge, and they had a very positive experience meeting young engineers from all over the world. The young team even had an opportunity to be interviewed by Hexbug for their input and ideas on new projects. Advisors Maureen Wood and Judy Salisbury and their fellow robotics students are so proud! Watch a video of Lily and Parson practicing for worlds.

Ranney’s Upper School teams included: Team A - junior Christopher Glenn of Lincroft, junior Chip Johnson of Red Bank, and senior Ben Iglesia of West Allenhurst; and Team M - junior Rylan Foy of Spring Lake and international students Jiawen (Kevin) Yu, a sophomore, and Kangqing (Connie) Hall, a junior. Senior Will Zheng of Long Branch, from Team J, also attended to assist.

Our A team finished 85th out of 94 in their Upper School VEX Arts division, putting them in the top 5% in the world! Our M Team finished 8th in their Math division, also out of 94 teams, and was picked by the #1 team to be in the #1 seed alliance. In the elimination rounds, Team M easily won the quarterfinals but lost in semifinals.

“Only 72 robots made it to semifinal rounds, out of an initial 10,000 teams aiming to qualify,” said Advisor Chiara Shah. “They are in the elite of the elite! I am so proud of these students for their hard work and dedication. They work year-round - even in the summer - so they can come in every day to build. It is truly inspiring!”

Students in all three of Ranney School's divisions (Lower, Middle, and Upper) have the opportunity to participate in Robotics through courses, electives, and clubs. The school has two dedicated labs to the growing tech sport. Follow #RanneyRobots year-round on our Twitter feed and webpage.
