Ranney Sailing Team Finishes Strong in The Mid-Atlantic Coast Team Race Championship

The Ranney Sailing team took to the water at St. Mary’s College in Maryland last weekend to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Coast Team Race Championship, only the second team racing regatta in which the Panthers had participated.

Despite being new to team racing, Ranney finished fifth out of 14 teams that spanned the Atlantic Coast.  The conditions at St. Mary’s were very difficult, due to the lack of wind, which ultimately caused the regatta to end early.

Ranney was in fourth place on Sunday going into the championship round when the Race Committee abandoned the regatta and nullified all of the scores for the day, leading to a three -level tie breaker and a fifth-place finish.

It is an amazing accomplishment for the Ranney sailors, Luke Arnone, Cameron Giblin, Brooke Schmelz, Blake Epstein, Matthew Hamelsky, Catherine Vucetic and William Bayer, who, as a team, are now ranked in the top-five of all Atlantic Coast high schools in team racing.  The Panthers are coached by Clay Johnson.

Ranney heads to Kings Point Long Island Nov. 11-12 to compete in the Mid Atlantic Coast Fleet racing championship.
