Upper School Jazz Band Clinic

Below is a recap about a jazz clinic given to the Upper School Jazz Band students by Richard Boulger and Alex Foster, written by Max Kyrillos (Class of 2018):

On November 14th the Ranney Upper School Jazz Band was treated to a clinic with legendary NYC musicians Alex Foster (Saturday Night Live Band, Duke Ellington) and Richard Bouglar (Allman Brothers Band, Randy Brecker). In the first half of the clinic, the band performed some of their repertoire for the industry giants and were given constructive criticism and feedback on the pieces. Foster and Bouglar were interested in what kind of music the students enjoyed and discussed their own influences as well. Bouglar talked about his time studying under Jazz legends, Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard and the profound impact that they had on his life.

The second half of the clinic saw Foster working with the rhythm and saxophone sections while Bouglar worked with the brass section. A wide variety of topics were discussed including practice regimen and a more philosophical approach to playing music.  Foster talked about how each note must be phrased and accented with intention and direction. Foster and Bouglar gave a phenomenal introduction to these nuisances and have helped the Upper School Jazz Band students begin to think of music in a different light.
