A group of Ranney School students who call themselves the “Rockin’ Angels” recently teamed up to raise funds for a special community service initiative that inspired students across all divisions at Ranney to donate their gently used clothing in support of Family and Children’s Services (FCS) in Long Branch. As Monmouth County’s oldest non-profit social service agency, FCS will hold a special “Children’s Boutique” on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at its Thrift Boutique located at 307 Branchport Avenue in Long Branch. This two-day event will feature new and pre-loved clothing, shoes and outerwear for infants, children and young teens.
“Everyone needs help at some point in their lives,” explains 16-year-old Montana Pflaster ’13 of Monmouth Beach, “My girlfriends and I started Rockin’ Angels because we are blessed and wanted to share some of our good fortune with children and teens in our community.”
Montana - along with other ‘Angels,'
Christina Kalinowski ’13 of Monmouth Beach and
Madison Pflaster ‘14 of Ocean Township - decided to organize the clothing drive here at Ranney School, where they also earned support from the Ranney School Parents’ Association, which added the initiative to its recent
Fashion Show. In addition, the girls designed flyers, set up collection boxes, spoke to student groups about their effort and even reached out to family, friends and neighbors. From January 30 until February 16, collection bins were to be stationed on campus in the Dining Hall, GPA lobby and Margaret Mahon building. The students wanted to be sure that the clothing they collected was resold and not shredded or shipped overseas, so they reached out to FCS.
“Our Thrift Boutique does not usually carry children’s clothing,” said FCS Volunteer manager Samantha White. “But when Montana approached us with her idea, we were so impressed by her enthusiasm and energy for the project that we decided to stage a special two-day event. We couldn’t provide this benefit to the community if it were not for Montana and her Rockin’ Angels.”
The "Children’s Boutique" will feature a variety of items for children and young adults, including girl’s dresses, boy’s and young men’s suits, blazers and ties, uniform attire, play clothes, outerwear, shoes and some accessories. All proceeds from the sale will go directly to fund FCS’s dozen programs and services, including child literacy, homelessness prevention and home care.
The Thrift Boutique, which regularly stocks men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, housewares, linens and small furniture items, is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Donations of new and gently used items can be brought to the store during regular business hours. A complete list of items the store accepts and does not accept can be found on the agency’s
website or on its
Facebook page. Meanwhile, any children's donations can be deposited at designated stations located across the Ranney School campus until Thursday!
