Expanded Vision for the Scholar-Athlete Tradition Unfolds
The Athletic Department is proud to present a new series that will outline exciting aspects of Ranney's new Athletic Strategic Plan. Ranney School recently unveiled its "21st Century Vision for the Ranney Scholar-Athlete," a vision that will infuse the school's emerging athletic mission with the hallmark of excellence that has defined its academic programs for more than 50 years.
The Ranney School Athletic Department is proud to announce its first step towards fulfilling exciting new aspects of a vision for the Ranney scholar-athlete — a vision that will include a more diversified and competitive sports program aimed at preparing students for a rewarding scholar-athlete experience as well as the competitive edge needed to succeed, no matter what the level of play.
Plans aimed at forming the “Perfect Partnership” with some local club and travel teams are currently underway. This new relationship will grant all Ranney students the opportunity to grow and improve their skills with talented coaches 12 months out of the year. In addition, Ranney began a “partnership” with the United Lacrosse Club last spring. This affiliation continued over the summer and fall months, and we are looking forward to their returning in 2012 as well.
Our second “partnership” links the athletics program with the New Jersey Wildcats Soccer Club. The Wildcats staff will conduct soccer skill clinics for all ages on the Ranney campus during the spring and summer months. Partnering with the Wildcats allows Ranney’s talented soccer players, who are constantly striving to compete at a higher level, the opportunity to play for an even more competitive club team. As an added bonus, training and play time will take place either directly on Ranney’s state-of-the-art fields or inside its top-of-the-line facilities.
The Athletic Department strongly believes in the need to develop young athletes, and its new Lower School athletics program will begin this spring and offer soccer and girls’ lacrosse. Coaches have been in contact with local schools to develop a small interscholastic league for third through fifth grade students. In the Lower School, plans are currently being developed for basketball and other team sports. In addition, Coach Ian McNamara will conduct speed, agility and quickness sessions for Lower School students upon returning from spring break. An additional speed, agility and quickness camp will be held on campus this summer, providing an excellent opportunity for Lower, Middle and varsity level athletes to improve their skills over the summer months.
Fifth grade students will also be eligible to compete in a fall soccer league in conjunction with a Middle School JV program next fall. This program will include interscholastic competition with other local schools. This is very exciting news as it will further develop our younger athletes and sooner prepare them for Middle School and varsity sports.
Our varsity coaches are busy preparing summer plans for their teams and many will be participating in summer leagues and camps in addition to training on the Ranney campus. A program to train out-of-season varsity athletes during Physical Education and after-school sessions was also conducted this winter, and such training sessions will continue over the spring months as well.
This article is the first in a series of articles that will further outline the exciting aspects of our new Athletic Strategic Plan. Our improved vision will infuse our emerging athletic mission with the hallmark of excellence that has defined academic programs at Ranney for more than 50 years. This new plan will examine every aspect of the Athletic Department and reach across all three divisions within the school. It is exciting, challenging and, most of all, will provide scholar-athletes — no matter what age — with an environment that promotes and supports academic, athletic and personal achievement as we proudly enter the Shore Conference this upcoming fall.
