Senior Lauren Harris Named National Merit Finalist
Ranney School is proud to announce that Lauren Harris ’12 of Spring Lake has been named a Finalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation declared Lauren as one of its Semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program on September 14, 2011. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools throughout the United States were entered into the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program after taking a 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Semifinalists, like Lauren, were among the highest scorers throughout each of the 50 states, and represent less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors.
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship® Award. Now qualifying for the Finalist level, Lauren will compete with approximately 15,000 other academically talented high school seniors for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million that will be awarded this spring. About 90 percent of Semifinalists attain Finalist standing, and more than half of Finalists win the National Merit Scholarship — also earning the title of Merit Scholar®.
Lauren is one of the top students in her graduating class at Ranney School, enrolled in 10 Advanced Placement and nine Honors courses throughout her Upper School career. A self-directed and motivated senior, she has been inducted into six esteemed honor societies, including the most recent Cum Laude Society on March 6, 2012. These honor society inductions demonstrate excellence across multiple academic divisions spanning math, science, Spanish and art. Lauren is also a three-season varsity athlete as well as member in other extra-curricular activities offered at Ranney, and participates in National Federation of Temple Youth as Vice President.
