Seven Students Attend Foreign Language Poetry Recitation Contest

Seven Ranney students showcased their Mandarin, French and Spanish speaking skills at the 29th Annual Orlando Saa Foreign Language Poetry Recitation Contest on Monday, May 14, 2012. This poetry contest — sponsored by the William Patterson University Department of Languages and Cultures each year — tests the knowledge and skills of those Middle and High School students who study foreign languages by asking that they recite poetry in Arab, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin or Spanish. Students spanning 57 schools throughout New Jersey attended this year’s event held in the University Commons Ballroom, where Ranney’s very own Evan Schultz ’17 (Colts Neck) placed first over both Middle and High School students participating in the Beginner Spanish category.

Evan’s teacher, Marcia Hernandez, could not be more delighted to see one of her students earn such a distinguished accomplishment while reciting Gloria Fuertes' poem Al Borde. “Evan demonstrated a sincere dedication to learning her poem, and recited it with such superb timing, pronunciation and intonation,” said Señorita Hernandez. Other teachers, who served as coaches to participants at the event included Mandarin Chinese teacher Mae Jan, French teachers Marianne Moran and Isabelle Daly, and Spanish teacher Ina Gurman. Under their leadership, each of the following students also gave outstanding performances on behalf of the Ranney community:

Beginner Chinese
Beginner French

Sarah Killian ’18
Tessa Payer ’16
Christopher Farkouh ’14
Alexandra DeMarco ’13
