Craig Slater (
Tinton Falls) also saw success at this weekend’s Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championships, where he garnered Ranney’s second national rowing title in just two years. While
Craig was able to secure wins at both the Garden State Games and Stotesbury Regatta this spring, it was not until competing at the Scholastic National Championships that he could proudly claim the triple crown of Scholastic Rowing.
Beginning May 25, Craig took first over opponents representing such schools as Cornwall, Friends Academy and St. Joseph Prep as he obtained a time of 5:53.560 in heat one of the Men’s Varsity Single race. Craig, along with the top four rowers from each heat, then advanced to a semi-final race held Saturday, May 26, 2012. With the top three finishers eligible to compete for a national title, Craig managed to once again place first — this time in 5:31.341. He then earned Ranney’s second national title and a gold medal with a time of 5:23.803 at the Men’s Varsity Single finals later in the afternoon — finishing approximately five seconds faster than silver medalist Eric Blood of Germantown Academy.
