On February 6, Upper School student artists will get the chance to display their work with a new exhibit in the Blue and White Gallery outside of RSPA Panther Hall. The theme of the new exhibit, Exploration and Process, compares the art studio to a science lab where students engage in experimentation, observation, analysis, creation, reflection and critique. Each work of art displayed will reflect these steps and the work completed by students who are enrolled in Digital Photography, Ceramics and Printmaking.
“One unique element of Ranney School’s Visual Arts program is that students have the ability to take semester long classes to focus on their work and fully explore their potential,” explained Visual Arts Department Chair Kate Greenberg. “The work in our newest exhibit will showcase the work of these wonderful students and will celebrate all they have learned throughout the semester.”
In each class offered, the process is an important element in the work that is created. All of the art classes featured have a strong element of process incorporated into them and the exhibition is designed to educate about those processes, while enjoying the works created by students who have learned them.
Printmakers learned the process of intaglio printing, which involves etching metals and using a press to produce prints. They also have learned how to make a collagraph plate, which is built up on to a cardboard surface, and then created both a raised physical texture and color on the print. They also created reduction relief prints using linoleum as the plate’s surface.
Photography students studied the integral role that the process plays in the final product. By learning software, such as Photoshop, as well as the mechanics of their cameras, students learned how to create and manipulate photographs. Ceramics and glass students worked with slab construction and throwing on the wheel. They also learned how to load a kiln, create fire and glaze ceramic work, and finally, how to fuse and slump glass to create beautiful and unique works of art.
The Visual Arts Department is pleased and proud to present the work of its first semester students; we hope you will come and see the demonstration of their skills and talents at the opening of the exhibit on February 6. There will be an Artists Reception from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. and the exhibit will be up in the gallery through April 1, 2014.
