Lower Schoolers Walk for Juvenile Diabetes Research

Building on their service project from last school year, Ranney Lower Schoolers and their families participated in a mid-October “Walk to Cure” for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The Ranney School-based team, named “Team Whatever” by the students, had about 50 members in all as they walked through Avon-by-the-Sea with other Monmouth County residents in support of the cause. The goal of the walk, JDRF’s largest Type 1 Diabetes event in the world, is to raise funds and support to “turn Type One into Type None.” Team Whatever raised $14.5k for the walk, almost double the team’s record from last year.

In spring 2014, a second-grade class presented a check to JDRF for $2,700. The funds were raised by the students’ button and magnet sale and included generous donations. Salvatore Principato came up with the idea to start the button drive based on his friend and classmate who has diabetes as well as his “business partner,” whose younger brother has diabetes.
