Middle and Upper School Ensemble Make Music Together

During the first quarter, Upper and Middle School Orchestra students joined together to play Dance of the Tumblers by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.
The Ranney Upper School Orchestra is now in its third year and, since conception, has grown rapidly from a handful of students to more than 35 members in 2014-2015. The orchestra features a full string section (first and second violins, violas, cellos and string bass) as well as a concise woodwind section of flutes and clarinets, a brass section of trumpets and a French horn, and percussion (snare drum, bass drum, timpani and mallets).

Students in grades 9 through 12 comprise the Upper School Orchestra and the ensemble performs at Ranney’s winter and spring concerts as well as at major school functions, including Fall Convocation, the annual Cum Laude Society induction ceremony and graduation. Through the Tri-M® Honor Society, the Upper School Orchestra is also active in community service performances throughout the area, including at local assisted living facilities. This year, the orchestra members will also take on the important project of accompanying the Upper School spring musical.

For seventh- and eighth-grade Middle Schoolers, orchestra is being offered as an academic course for the first time this school year with a focus on string students. The Middle School orchestra is composed of violins, violas, cellos and string bass, as well as a piano accompanist.

During the first quarter, both the Upper and Middle School Orchestras joined together to play Dance of the Tumblers by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. “This combined project allows the students to work side by side, exchange creative ideas, learn from each other and mentor each other, all a while strengthening individual and ensemble skills and enjoying making music together,” says All-Division Orchestra Director Dr. Dorothy Sobieski. The piece will be performed at the Upper School Winter Concert on January 9, 2015. (See a sneak preview in the video attached to this story.) The Middle School Orchestra will also be featured alongside the Middle School Chorus and Band at their Winter Concert on December 12, 2014.
