Finance Lab Helps Ranney Team Perform in Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge

Two Ranney Upper School teams competed in the 2023 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge, recording impressive results out of thousands of graduate school, undergraduate, and (a very small number of) high school competitors.

In the 2023 Bloomberg Global Trading Challenge, teams of three to five students competed against other top students around the world to experience firsthand what real-world investing looks and feels like. Teams used the Bloomberg Terminals to define market assumptions, develop a return-generating strategy, and execute trades within a closed network. The winning team recorded the highest time weighted relative return, relative to the Bloomberg World Large, Mid & Small Cap Price Return Index (WLS Index).
Ranney had two successful teams - with one team in 83rd place (top 4% ) and one in 103rd (top 5%) globally.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment for a group of high-schoolers,” said co-advisor and faculty member Chris Buckley. “For reference, the team in 83rd Globally would be in 1st place for all of Africa and the Middle East Region and in 5th place for all of the Latin America region. The team is not far from a top ten placement in the North America Region.”
The team in 103rd place Globally is comprised of the following students:
Colin Bradley ‘24 (Captain)
Braden Chavez ‘24
JT Cook ‘24
Jared Gizersky ‘24

The team in 83rd place includes the following students:
Ava Deady ‘25 (Captain)
Sophia Lennon ‘24
Yuexin "CiCi" Li ‘25
Ashka Patel ‘25
Rosepreet Virdi ‘24

Ranney introduced the Finance Lab with 12 Bloomberg terminals—the same technology used by banks and corporations worldwide this fall. Ranney is one of only a handful of independent schools providing students access to Bloomberg Terminals and the range of learning opportunities they offer. The lab is home to a new finance course, which introduces students to the principles of finance and the world of Wall Street through case studies and real-world examples. The school is developing a Finance and Entrepreneurship Certificate program to parallel two current offerings: a STEAM and a Global Studies certificate. Within a robust and rigorous liberal arts curriculum, these programs allow students to specialize in areas of particular interest.

Students will have the opportunity to attain certifications offered by Bloomberg in market concepts, ESG (environmental, social, and governance investing), and finance fundamentals. The terminals are also an asset to other classes including economics, government, computer science, and mathematics.

“Many members of our alumni and parent community work in the fields of finance, banking, portfolio management, and entrepreneurship,” said Head of School, Dr. John Griffith. “The new lab gives us the opportunity to bring these experts to campus to engage with our students as they explore college majors and consider career paths. The lab will be a great resource for student clubs, capstone projects, our immersive Maymester program, and workshops. The learning and enrichment opportunities for our students and alumni are truly incredible.”
