Meanwhile, students involved in academic and talent development Summer Programs at Ranney School experience a chance to discover interests and nurture talents, especially in STEM areas of study– science, technology, engineering and math. National science initiatives advocate for the creation of K-12 STEM programming, especially during the summer when out-of-school enrichment is essential for honing skills and developing intellectual aptitude and academic confidence.
Exposure to STEM experiences begins early at Ranney School with spirited four and five year olds participating in highly engaging Interactive Preschool Adventures. Science, technology, engineering and math experiences extend across all elementary grades and continue into high school math and science courses also providing exceptional offerings in summer STEM programming. Additional elementary STEM enrichment courses have been added this year in robotics, science and math, including Singapore Math.
An essential element of Summer STEM Programming at Ranney School encourages boys and girls to get fully engaged in the learning process. By asking questions, making observations, analyzing data and applying information, motivated students connect to lab experiences, access technology and solve real-world problems – and have fun with peers! These highly engaging learning experiences support a national momentum to teach STEM curricula by using innovative teaching methods and creative and divergent thinking lessons to go beyond “grades” to think and study on a level that makes learning over the summer fun, highly personalized, individually relevant and transformational!
This summer promises to be an exciting one at Ranney with further enhanced Gifted and Talented courses designed to meet the needs of students who exhibit the advanced cognitive skills and intrinsic motivation to delve deeply into a topic of interest. This enrichment curriculum challenges students to extend their learning by developing higher order thinking skills, and provides applications for inquiry, project-centered learning and shared discussion.
Students are also encouraged to spread their creative wings at Ranney School and discover painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and glass, graphic arts and digital media or drama, music performance or theater arts. The exceptional visual and performing arts opportunities at Ranney School continue into the summer with Fine Art Workshops and Instrumental Insights: Orchestra, Concert and Jazz Band within the Music Conservatory and drama and integrated theater arts in the full-day Performing Arts Academy.
The benefits of an arts education are broad based in their ability to significantly develop a child’s cognitive skills, including language processing and reasoning and visual/spatial intelligence that enhance mathematical reasoning and problems solving. Immersion in the arts sparks a child’s imagination and self-expression, creative thinking, fine and gross motor skills, cultural understanding, collaborative learning and disciplined planning and sustained effort. These essential artistic, dramatic and musical experiences develop a child’s skills for success in school and in life.
