Student-Athlete Shana Fitzmaurice, Class of 2019

A September 2017 Q&A between Shana Fitzmaurice '19, Varsity Cross Country & Track/Field, and Athletic Director Natalie Gorman

What are your goals for the Cross Country team this season?
For everyone to have huge PRs [personal records] and to have as many of us possible to qualify for championship races. We’ve all been working really hard, increasing our mileage, and keeping up with our strength routines, and I can’t wait to see everyone's hard work pay off. I know we are all going to reach our goals with our new amazing coaches.

What are your goals individually as an athlete this year?
To become a stronger, smarter runner, and to be more strategic in my races. Timewise, I am also aiming to run under 19 minutes for the 5k and to run 5:10 in the mile.

What is your dream school to attend after graduation? Do you want to run in college?
I’d love to run in college. I’m not sure what school yet, but I definitely want it to be somewhere with strong academics and a competitive running program.

What is your fondest memory of being a student athlete at Ranney?
Having pep-talks with the whole team right before races. We all huddle together and hype each other up for a great race. It’s great to have teammates that truly support each other.

What has been your most challenging class at Ranney?
So far, the most challenging class was AP United States History sophmore year. I learned so much, but it was my first AP level course.

Who has been your favorite teacher at Ranney?
Being a Ranney lifer [10-plus years], I have had many great teachers. In Upper School, one of my favorite teachers is Mrs.Pongrac, she is a amazing advisor and mentor.

How has athletics at Ranney helped you to learn valuable skills such as time management, discipline, and perseverance?
Athletics at Ranney has helped me tremendously with all of these characteristics. From the start of cross country season in freshman year, I had to learn time management to be able to stay after school for practice and still have time to finish all of my homework. I learned discipline from seeing how the hard work that you put in at practice pays off. Lastly, I learned perseverance because not every race or meet goes as planned, and you have to learn to stick with it and not give up to achieve your goals.
